"i wanted to be" analysis
The poem “I Wanted to Be” by Marc Kelly Smith focuses on following your dreams, which is one of the topics in Slam Poetry. Through his beginning metaphors, Smith speaks about how he wanted to become something meaningful and greater than what he was doing now. However, he did not, but now he has questions about why didn’t he follow those dreams and follow through with them. Also, when he was on the right track, “What happened when the chain on the asteroid slipped out of our hands?” In the end, Smith knows that his audience goes through the same thing and he wants them realize. Then, in the end of the day, Smith wants his audience to actually take this spoken word as motivation for them to follow their dreams, instead of doing what he did.
