Beats Movement
The beats movement began in the 1950s, right after World War II, in New York City and San Francisco. At this moment, poets like Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsburg opposed mainstream politics and culture. Due to this, most of the poems from the Beats were basically a battle against social conformity and literary tradition. So, in these poems personal release, purification, and illumination were promoted through drugs, jazz, sex, and Buddhism. However, because of these topics that were discussed some poems actually went to court in charges of obscenity. Thanks to these trials national attention was brought to the Beats movement, which is why it’s thought to be the biggest of its time.
