Black arts
The Black Arts movement was the artistic branch of the Black Power movement, which was held in the 1960s, around the time of Malcolm X's death. This movement was started in Harlem by Amiri Baraka, originally known as LeRoi Jones. Black Arts poets were promoting African Americans to settle off in their own community and move beyond protest. Due to this, the 3 main goals of Black Art poems were to be functional, committing, and collective. Poets from this movement include Rosa Guy, Gwendolyn Brooks, & Maya Angelou.
